Smith Mountain Lake Information

Welcome to beautiful Smith Mountain Lake, “The Jewel of the Blue Ridge”, with over 500 miles of shoreline, in southwest Virginia, at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, centrally located just 25 miles southeast of Roanoke, VA or just 25 miles southwest of Lynchburg, VA.  The lake was created in the 1960’s when Appalachian Power Company, which is now American Electric Power, dammed the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers to generate hydroelectric power.

Smith Mountain Lake offers many activities including boating, fishing, golfing, hiking, biking, dining out, shopping and much more with a mild climate and friendly people.  The lake consists of locals like me and I am also proud of the fact it has also attracted people from many different locations throughout the country, who now call it home. The lake has also grown into one of the most popular vacation spots on the East Coast.
